Week 4: Faces and Heads from Different Angles
I learned a lot this week from Proko about how to draw better proportions for faces. I used to draw portraits for people in high school but I’ve been out of practice in recent years. I’ve also drawn cartoons over the years however, that’s different. The proportions are different and the shapes and expressions are often more exaggerated. It was cool learning a new technique, but it was also hard unlearning my old habits. I do like their method but admittedly, found myself at times reverting back to how I was used to drawing. All in all, I will try to do better and put into practice what I have learned this week. Below is the first video I learned from:

Trying Out The Loomis Method:
There is a lot more construction with this method than just drawing a circle for a head. If you watch their video, you will see that you are better able to get the angles of the face when using this technique. It’s also easier to learn where to properly place the facial features. I struggled more before, but with this method, the placement of the eyes, nose, mouth and even the ears is easier and more effective. My drawings are still not perfect but I was really impressed with how much more efficient it was whilst trying it out.
If you struggle with drawing people’s heads or faces, please give this technique a try. The video that I linked is only part 1. They also have a part 2 that you can watch as well. It goes more in-depth and you can also learn the difference in drawing adult vs children’s features.
Have a great day, fellow cozy artists! Have fun on your own art journeys.
