Why Art Is A Good Hobby To Get into

Why Is Art A Good Hobby?

“It could inspire you to be more creative with your writing or help you to have more creative ideas in other areas. Painting and drawing also help to enhance fine motor skills, as well as improve hand-eye coordination. It is also good for developing problem-solving skills.” - Gateways School

“Art helps you process your emotions and understand your surroundings. It allows you to see life from a different perspective and it makes you feel alive. Art has always been an important part of human society since the beginning of time. Art has been used as a tool for cultural exchange, education, and expression.” - Eden Gallery

I chose these quotes because they resonate with the way that I feel about art. And I feel that art is all around us. Michelangelo said, ”the true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.”

Even now as an adult, I find that when I have had a particularly stressful day, creating art can be quite therapeutic. Of course, if I’m too tired I would probably just watch a show and fall asleep. But, I find that at least with art, I feel a little more proactive, productive; and that I accomplished a personal goal.

Treating Your Creative Self

Art wasn’t something that I needed to do for someone else, just for myself. Like treating yourself by: painting your nails, having a spa day, or having something yummy to eat. It feels like you are soothing your mind from the stresses that are there. They may still be there when you are done, but by taking that little break, I think that you are better able to deal with those problems later on with a clear, refreshed mind. When you take a break from something and come back to it later, you can approach it from a different perspective.

The Science Behind Being Creative

The University of Calgary has this to say:

“With recent advances in biological, cognitive and neurological science, there are new forms of evidence on the arts and the brain. For example, researchers have used biofeedback to study the effects of visual art on neural circuits and neuroendocrine markers to find biological evidence that visual art promotes health, wellness and fosters adaptive responses to stress.

In another study, cognitive neuroscientists found that creating art reduces cortisol levels (markers for stress), and that through art people can induce positive mental states. These studies are part of a new field of research, called neuroestheticsthe scientific study of the neurobiological basis of the arts.

Neuroesthetics uses brain imaging, brain wave technology and biofeedback to gather scientific evidence of how we respond to the arts. Through this, there is physical, scientific evidence that the arts engage the mind in novel ways, tap into our emotions in healthy ways and make us feel good.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, I find art to be a good stress reliever, others have found it to be the same for them, and maybe you will find it helpful too. Why not give it a try? If it is not for you then at least you tried it out.

Have you found art to be therapeutic? Please share.
